Three days later they had stopped near a stream and Savannah and Adela set up camp. They were beneath a tall oak with blankets spread and the horses tethered nearby. A rabbit killed by Red Hawk was on a spit over an open fire and the roasting smell mingled with the wood smoke, making Savannah’s mouth water. Potatoes were in a small skillet, and a jug of cider was cooling in the creek.

Red Hawk had gone to the creek to bathe. It had been four days since they had fled Nacogdoches. To Savannah’s relief, Adela was finally beginning to mend. Her face was still black with bruises, but the swelling had gone down and she could straighten up and move about with more ease.

They had traveled across country, something Red Hawk seemed more at ease doing than following trails and roads.

Adela was curled up on the blanket, asleep. Savannah continued getting supper ready, seeing no need to waken her.

As she worked, she heard a muffled sound and the rustle of bushes nearby. She whirled around to peer in the direction of the noise, but saw nothing moving. Yet she was certain she had heard something.

Adela slept quietly and the flames crackled, a thin spiral of gray smoke rising in the air. Savannah’s skin prickled and she glanced at the pistol Red Hawk had left with her.

Nothing moved. She could hear the whistle of a bird, the crackle of the fire. Still, she felt as if she were being watched and that something was wrong. She glanced over her shoulder. The woods were dense, but only a few yards into the trees ran the creek where Red Hawk had gone. He told her to fire the pistol if she needed him in an emergency.

She watched the bushes. When nothing happened as minutes passed, she let out her breath and returned to stirring a pot of boiling greens.

And then she heard a twig snap and another rustle.
